The House Story

Building this 'house' has been a life's work. The doors were opened, so to speak, in 2017 with the publication of David Earle's A Handbook for Ecstatic Survival. Smaller projects were launched after that, while the construction & remodeling continued. Now, bigger things are coming together.
But it does go right back to childhood. I loved all kinds of historical sites, re-creations & re-enactments. So I had the nerdy idea to turn an abandoned local Tudor-style building into a 'History House' for exhibitions & events.
I loved books, too, although I wasn't a big reader until later on. It was about how they looked, felt, smelled. And I loved cut-and-paste. So I made a sci-fi fanzine in high school & ended up as a freelance editor, designer & writer, which led to the idea of a publishing house.
Theatre was my first love, though. And what is a theatre but a 'house of shake'? It's a safe space for danger – for trying new things, thinking new thoughts, experimenting. A playhouse is for playing!
Having studied & worked in live performance, I wanted to produce events with and by my friends & associates. And many of them worked in multiple media. So why not a production house? It could also gather my own activities, varied as they were, under one roof.
Finally & most personally, I'm happiest between communities. I started singing country music at age 27, although I'm a city kid, and my big debut in rural Saskatchewan was for an audience of cowboy ranchers & modern dancers! I also enjoy hosting. So, my living room has always welcomed friends from all different 'worlds' – like an informal public house, an inn at the crossroads.
