History of the House
It all started when I was 12 or so. And it started as a “History House” …
I always loved historical sites and re-enactments. I even told my mom that I wanted to turn a local abandoned building into a “History House” for exhibitions & events.
“Play House”
History nerd – and theatre nerd! Directing friends in little shows in public school led to extracurricular explorations and then to contemporary dance, performance art, special events, community celebrations, and my own projects.
What is a theatre but a “house of shake” – a place for playing, for shaking things up?
“Publishing House”
The “doors opened” in 2017
I was thrilled and honoured when we launched House of ShAkE with the publication of David Earle’s A Handbook for Ecstatic Survival. After that, there were smaller projects like “Porch Songs” and Schoenberg’s Return while construction continued. Now there's a chapbook, “We gazed lustily,” by my dear friend Gilles Goyette, who passed away recently, along with his forthcoming Super Vox.
The symbol of a house has always been meaningful for me, too – as in the beautiful old hymn, a “mansion with many rooms” where “all are free” …
A phrase that popped into my head once: “Something solid made of openings, a structure made of doors …”
I always loved books, too. And cut-and-paste. So I made a sci-fi fanzine in high school with a friend, and as an adult ended up as a freelance editor, publication & promotional designer, and now writer & publisher.
“Production House”
I wanted to put my skills from working in different areas toward producing projects by friends and associates whose work I think is important and exciting.
Why not gather these together under one roof?
